Under the Chair and Under the Weather: Myles’ Paws-itive Adventure at St. Francis Pet Hospital

If you ask Myles about his favorite places to visit, the vet’s office is usually not at the top of his list. However, this morning we made the quick drive to St. Francis Pet Hospital to see if Dr. Rennekamp could provide some much-needed relief for Myles’ pesky ear infection.

As usual, our visit began with Myles’ brilliant reenactment of Houdini’s vanishing act – or more accurately described as the world’s worst game of hide-and-seek with an exam room chair.

Not to fear, Dr. Rennekamp and his incredible staff have proven time and again that they possess a unique superpower when it comes to anxious animals like Myles. What is it you ask? Infinite patience and, of course let’s not forget, the magical healing power of treats.

After a few minutes of gentle coaxing and some strategically placed milk-bones, Dr. Rennekamp always convinces Myles to brave the outside world again.

Seeing this level of care got me thinking about the incredible role that veterinarians play in our lives.

Unlike human patients, our pets can’t point to a specific spot and explain where it hurts. They can’t describe their symptoms or tell a doctor how long they’ve been feeling under the weather.

Because animals are unable to speak for themselves, veterinarians must be part doctor and part detective. It takes a remarkably dedicated person to commit their life to decoding the silent signals of animals and advocating for their welfare.

The overall care administered by veterinary teams goes way beyond just fixing acute issues like Myles’ itchy ears.

Their days are a fast-paced balancing act, seamlessly shifting from the preventative care of yearly exams to swooping in as lifesaving heroes during sudden medical emergencies.

On top of that, they manage the delicate emotional care required for anxious pets who prefer “furniture camouflage,” such as our Myles. When Dr. Rennekamp takes the time to speak in a soothing “everything is fine” voice, and wait for Myles to reclaim his bravery, he is truly treating the whole patient.

Dr. Rennekamp and his team at St. Francis Pet Hospital don’t just treat illnesses; they listen to the unspoken needs of our pets to keep them safe, happy, and thriving – ensuring we get as many joyful, tail-wagging years together as possible.

To Dr. Rennekamp and his staff, thank you for always looking out for Myles – even when you have to play hide-and-seek with him first!
